Nunes & the Bee

The political reality of the Congressman's battle over water is that he's a Republican from the Central Valley in a state dominated by Democrats to the North & South.

Mar 02, 2018

We had always hoped the Fresno Bee would have been more of a champion for agricultural water.  They were the major newspaper for the Central Valley.  You'd have thought they would be the natural ally of the farmer.  But...they just weren't.  They left the farmer to hang out to dry, literally.  The Bee editorial board always sided with those who wanted to take ag water away.

Now the Bee has an opinion piece writer who is lashing out at Congressman Devin Nunes.  The Congressman can fend for himself and doesn't need us to fight his fights for him, but we would like to take issue with the water comments in his recent column "Let’s set aside Russia and the memo for a moment. What has Devin Nunes done for us?"

In the article Bee writer Marek Warszawski says "We deserve better than your absent brand of leadership...Most striking to me was when Rory (Bee reporter Rory Appleton) asked you to describe your major accomplishments over the last 15 years. It was a question you had to know was coming. Your answer only served to illuminate how short that list is.  Thanks to you, the citizens of the United States know the San Joaquin Valley has a “big water problem.” That’s your doing? Get real, Devin. Water has been a hot-button topic for decades, since before you were wearing a mullet in high school.  Other than complain about enviros and the Endangered Species Act, what have you done to help find a solution?  Just for fun, I looked up a few water bills. Know whose name I found as the sponsor of H.R. 4127, the Upper San Joaquin River Storage Act of 2014 that proposes the Temperance Flat Dam? Rep. Jim Costa’s. Know whose name I didn’t find? Yours."

The political reality of the Congressman's battle over water is that he's a Republican from the Central Valley in a state dominated by Democrats to the North & South.  The state Democrat leadership pretty much controls the water situation.  Nunes has been brutally honest about all this, much more honest than U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein who talks a good game when fundraising here but never delivers.  In addition, Nunes can't control the two Democrats from California in the U.S.  Senate.  His legislation has passed the House only to be blocked in the Senate by the California Senators.

Let's put it this way:  the entire political establishment of California is against Nunes and the farmers of the Central Valley.  From the Governor, Lt. Governor, Att. General, Treasurer, Controller, the State Senate, State Assembly, the State Water Resources Control Board, the California Water Commission, the Natural Resources Agency, the NRDC, Environmental Defense Fund, Sierra Club, and who knows how many other commissions, advisors and committees.  The Bee sides with all of them against Nunes and the farmers...then blames Nunes?  Really?

We outlined in our last newsletter (They're Joking, Right?) how much water has been removed from the Valley over the past quarter century.  All this has been done while the Bee sides with the Governor and his political agenda.  And now this writer blames Congressman Nunes?  Ask the Governor what he's done for the water situation here.  Ask former President Obama who stopped here during the drought to see our plight, then did nothing.

The Bee needs to look in the mirror to find blame before they point fingers at Devin Nunes.  As we say, we don't need to fight Devin's fights, but some things need to be said when the answers are so obvious.

Let’s set aside Russia and the memo for a moment. What has Devin Nunes done for us?
